Menopause and Prozac: What You Should Know

One of the most common side effects of menopause is depression. There are a variety of reasons depression may occur during this time period. One reason is hormonal imbalance. During menopause, hormones such as estrogen and progesterone become imbalanced which may cause many different symptoms including depression. Another reason women become depressed during menopause is because they are upset at the many changes that are happening. No matter why menopausal women may become depressed, the important thing is to get help. Menopause and Prozac is a hot topic because this antidepressant is one of the most commonly prescribed for women experiencing the change of life.

Prozac, or fluoexetine, is one of the oldest SSRI antidepressants on the market. SSRI stands for selective serotonin reputake inhibitor and the category includes other drugs like Paxil, Zoloft and Lexapro. Prozac is billed as a well-tolerated antidepressant although it may cause side effects in some users. Another issue that should be mentioned is that anyone taking SSRIs like Prozac should never abruptly stop taking their medication as withdrawal syndrome may occur. Instead, anyone wishing to cease their SSRI therapy should be slowly tapered off over time.

Recent studies have shown that Prozac may be effective for reducing or eliminating the hot flashes associated with menopause. Therefore, Prozac is often prescribed for menopausal women who are not only experiencing depression but other side effects as well which may include hot flashes. Prozac is so popular that it can be obtained in generic form, which can save you a great deal of money on the cost of the medicine. This is another reason this SSRI is widely used for perimenopausal, menopausal and post menopausal women. It is thought to be a reasonable and often preferable alternative to HRT or hormone replacement therapy. Women who are high risk when it comes to using HRT can often find the relief they need from an SSRI.

Menopause and Prozac are two subjects that should be discussed with your physician. If you feel that an SSRI antidepressant like Prozac might be helpful for you, don't be ashamed to ask for it. For women going through the change of life, antidepressants can be used alongside other treatments and remedies for maximum relief of symptoms. The most important thing is to treat symptoms under the strict supervision of your medical professional.
