Menopause Paxil Use -- Can This Drug Help with Symptoms?
![]() |
Menopause is defined as the cessation of menstruation. It occurs past the age of 40 and is defined as occurring after a woman has ceased to have a menstrual period for at least one year. The changes associated with menopause can last for years and include a variety of uncomfortable symptoms. Menopause Paxil use is one alternative to treating the side effects of menopause. Such side effects may include hot flashes, anxiety and depression. While Paxil may not eliminate all the symptoms associated with menopause, it may provide relief for some of them.
The imbalance of hormones like estrogen and progesterone can be treated by HRT, or hormone replacement therapy. For some women who are high-risk, HRT can be even more risky and damaging than the symptoms themselves. This is where SSRI antidepressants can come in handy.Low to moderate doses of Paxil, or paroxetine, may prove beneficial with certain symptoms like hot flashes, anxiety and depression.
Of course, Paxil is not a magic pill. Like all SSRI antidepressants, there may be uncomfortable side effects. Side effects might include headaches, dizziness, dry mouth, loss of libido and night sweats. As you might already be aware, loss of libido and night sweats are also symptoms of menopause. Therefore, you will need to weigh all the pros and cons of using this drug before making a decision. Your doctor should be able to provide you more information about using Paxil. If he or she cannot, you may want to see a psychiatrist who is likely going to be more informed on the subject.
Menopause Paxil use should definitely be considered by women whose symptoms include anxiety and depression along with hot flashes. It is important to understand that SSRI antidepressants like Paxil take anywhere from four to eight weeks to reach full effectiveness. You will need to be patient and give the medication time to reach the proper level in your body before deciding whether or not it doesn't work. As far as side effects go, some may subside after a month or two and others may persist the entire time you're taking the medication. Even if you do experience side effects, you should never stop taking any SSRI abruptly as uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms may occur.
