Understanding Menopause Signs, Symptoms and Indicators
![]() |
There are various menopause signs, symptoms and indications that can announce the arrival of this change of life. Menopause happens when menstruation ends. This of course means a woman can no longer become pregnant. A woman's hormones may become imbalanced during this change and uncomfortable side effects are likely to occur. Most of the time, menopause happens past the age of 40. If a woman experiences menopausal symptoms before this age, it is called perimenopause. While there may be a wide variety of symptoms, most women experience the following when going through menopause:
Hot flashes -- Hot flashes can be described as severe flushing of the face and the sensation of feeling very hot. Hot flashes are a result of hormonal imbalance including the decrease of estrogen. There are a variety of treatments for hot flashes including multivitamins, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and progesterone cream which can be found over the counter.
Night sweats -- Night sweats are another common symptom and often happen along with hot flashes. Night sweats only occur at night and are very uncomfortable. Sufferers of night sweats often wake up soaked in cold sweat and must change their bedding and nightclothes. Sage tea is a commonly used natural remedy for night sweats.
Thinning hair -- Another side effect of the hormonal roller coaster caused by menopause is thinning hair. You may notice your hair has become see-through in certain areas. There are a variety of remedies for thinning hair including Rogaine and thickening shampoos. Concealing the thinning areas with powder or cream that matches your hair color can provide the illusion of thicker hair.
Excess facial hair -- While the hair on your head may be falling out, you might notice that you are growing excess hair on your face. Some women find HRT or hormone replacement therapy helps side effects like excess facial hair. And of course, facial hair can be bleached, waxed or plucked to make it less noticeable.
Anxiety and/or depression -- One of the most common menopause signs, symptoms and indicators is anxiety and/or depression. These effects can be hormonally based or be a reaction to the emotional issues and physical discomfort caused by menopause. Treatment for this problem includes talking to a therapist, taking antidepressants, or trying natural remedies such as St. John's Wort. Anxiety and depression, like all side effects of menopause, should be discussed with your doctor before a course of action is decided upon.
