Natural Herbs for Menopause

The change of life, also known as menopause, is a condition that every woman over the age of 40 will eventually experience. Some women start having menopausal symptoms before the age of 40, which is known as perimenopause. The symptoms associated with menopause can last for years and are caused by fluctuating and imbalanced hormones. Common symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, loss of sexual desire and thinning hair, to name just a few. Many women use natural herbs for menopause symptom relief. If you are interested in going the natural route, here are some herbs to consider:
Black Cohosh: Black cohosh is thought to be beneficial for menopausal women because of the phytoestrogens it contains. Phytoestrogens are similar to estrogen that is produced by the body. Therefore, using black cohosh may help balance the level of estrogen in the body and reduce side effects from hormonal imbalances.
Gingko Biloba: Gingko biloba is used by both men and women for a variety of different purposes. One of the most common uses for gingko biloba is to improve memory and sharpen concentration. Gingko may also encourage blood flow, increase vitality and improve energy levels.
Ginseng: Ginseng is another herb commonly used for increasing energy, vitality and brain power. The two most commonly used forms of ginseng are Panax and Siberian. Ginseng can help reduce fatigue from menopausal symptoms and improve circulation.
Red Clover: Red clover is an herb used to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, a common concern for women experiencing menopause. As estrogen decreases bone mass can also decrease which is a prime risk factor for this condition. Calcium supplements may also be helpful for reducing the risk of this condition.
Sage: Sage is a common kitchen herb used for cooking. When brewed as a tea and consumed several times per day including before bed, sage can reduce the occurrences of night sweats. Sage can be purchased at most any supermarket and should be brewed as you would any kind of loose tea leaves.
In addition to considering these herbs, you may want to consider supplements designed for menopause symptoms. Many natural herbs for menopause can be blended into supplement form which may be more effective than using them on their own. Before using any supplements of any kind, consult with your doctor. Even the safest herbs may interact with other medications and should be used under medical supervision.
