What are Premature Menopause Symptoms?
![]() |
Even if you are not old enough to experience menopause, which commonly happens around the age of 50, you can still experience premature menopause symptoms. Premature menopause is also known as perimenopause and is defined as menopausal symptoms which occur without the actual onset of menopause. Perimenopause is a time when a woman's body is preparing for the change of life to come within the next ten to fifteen years. Most women who do experience perimenopause do so between the ages of 35 and 45. Menopause itself is only defined after a woman has ceased menstruating for at least twelve months.
One of the first signs of premature menopause is a change in menstruation. Your periods may become sporadic, shorter or even longer in duration. There may be changes in the severity of your periods as well. Your flow may become lighter than before, or in some cases may actually become heavier. What feels like PMS might actually be perimenopause. Fatigue prior to your periods, for example, could be a sign of this condition. Of course, fatigue is a normal occurrence during PMS as well. You will need to discern whether or not other symptoms are happening along with the fatigue and cycle changes.
Other symptoms of perimenopause may include a loss of libido, weight gain, fatigue, hot flashes and night sweats. You may wonder if there are any remedies that can be used to alleviate these symptoms. The good news is that there are prescription, over the counter, and herbal remedies that can be used to battle the various symptoms of perimenopause. For example, herbs like gingko biloba and black cohosh are often used to treat a wide range of symptoms. SSRI antidepressants like Prozac and Zoloft are commonly prescribed for women suffering from hot flashes and depression caused by perimenopause.
If you think you may be dealing with premature menopause symptoms, your doctor can help you. He or she will want to perform a thorough examination to make sure your symptoms aren't being caused by any underlying medical problems. Once perimenopause has been diagnosed your doctor will inform you what he or she feels is the best course of action for you. Treatment options include hormone replacement therapy or HRT, herbal supplements, vitamins, over the counter treatments and combinations of several therapies together.
