A Guide to Menopause Natural Remedies

Menopause, also commonly referred to as the change of life, occurs when a woman stops menstruating and experiences a decline in estrogen levels. There are a variety of uncomfortable symptoms that may accompany menopause. Examples include hot flashes, night sweats, anxiety, depression and loss of sexual desire. Some women may experience many symptoms while others may only experience a few. There are different ways to deal with these symptoms if they occur. Some women opt for hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, while others prefer to go a more natural route. Before trying any menopause natural remedies, be sure to consult with your doctor.

Gingko biloba is a popular herb for treating the symptoms of menopause. Gingko is thought to be safe and well-tolerated by most women and may help increase mental sharpness, sex drive and circulation. Because gingko can increase blood flow you should not use this herb if you are taking blood thinners. Another common herb that can be used to treat the uncomfortable symptoms of menopause is sage. Sage is most often used to reduce night sweats. To use sage, try brewing tea with it and drinking a cup or two before going to bed. Sage is commonly used in cooking to add flavor to foods like sausage and Italian dishes.

Another popular remedy to help regulate the hormones and reduce uncomfortable menopausal and postmenopausal symptoms is ginseng. Ginseng is also commonly used as an energy supplement. The two most common types of ginseng to use are Panax and Siberian. Most people prefer to take ginseng in supplements. Speaking of supplements, there are special blends designed especially for symptoms of menopause. You can purchase such supplements at your local health food store or vitamin shop.

Depression is a common problem for menopausal and post menopausal women. Rather than taking antidepressants, some women opt for St. John's Wort. St. John's Wort is thought to help alleviate mild to moderate symptoms of depression. You should not take St. John's Wort if you are already on antidepressants. Another type of supplement women going through menopause should take is a multivitamin. You may want to add an extra calcium supplement to your regimen to help fight osteoporosis. Your doctor can talk to you about menopause natural remedies that he or she thinks might work well for you.
